State of the Union

Parthisan

Last night I slept very late in order to watch Bush's state of the union speech, a complete waste of time. Is that the norm for the audience to applaude every minute?? every bloody minute??? and each time it lasted for something like 10-20 seconds!! It was unbelievable. It was a show with almost no content for me, no wonder the international media do not pay much attention to it.

The political situation and the (ill-fated) reform movement in Iran has polished our minds and made us very demanding. I could easily compare Bush's "show" speech with the shows of the Iranian mullas, at least they expect people to shout out for support or salavat every 15 minutes!!

ok I also watched the speech, I guess I was expecting something serious but it was too much FILM (the iranian meaning) than anything else.

oh and yes, those frequent applauding drove me mad too, don't those people get tired of it? they all probably ended up with red sore hands!

I guess the american politicians have lost the border between seriousness and holywood-style shows!

Hah, you should have watched them during the Clinton administration is you thought this one was boring and had too many applauses. This one was actually pretty good as far as State of the Union speeches go.

Parthisan:

Brady I didn't see Clinton's state of the union speech, and based on what you said, I guess I didn't miss much :)

The thing is I expected this speech to be a direct and honest talk to the people of the United States, with some contrast to the inauguration speech. But it was completely the other way. If I get some free time, I'll go and dig out the union speeches of previous presidents, to see how different/similar the content of their speech was.
