Oldest Known Object

West Ender

Image of the oldest known object in the worldI photographed this very special object in the Hunterian Museum in the University of Glasgow and thought I'd shared my excitement with you. Let me simply quote from the museum board:

“This is the most important specimen in this exhibition.”

“It is a sample of the raw material which gave rise to everything else in our solar system - the Sun, Earth, rocks, and life.

This meteorite is one of a shower which fell at Allende in Mexico on February 8th 1969. The outer skin melted during its incoming flight through Earth's atmosphere. The inner part has a composition remarkably similar to that of the Sun as inferred from spectroscopic analysis of sunlight.

Its age has been determined rediometrically at 4,570,000,000 years.”

“This is the oldest known object.”

hmmmm ... very interesting! However, how can its inner part composition be very similar to sun's when it probably has no hydrogen.

Very very impressive, I never thought such an object would have been discovered and classified.

West Ender:

Ali S, that is not particularly a geological museum. Follow the museum's hyperlink and you'll find out more about it.
