Hotmail is increasing mailbox size to 250MB
Yesterday Omar Shahine, who works for Microsoft, blogged about Hotmail mailboxes being upgraded to 250MB. (2GB for MSN Premium customers) This is official now.
Appearantly the upgrade starts early in July...
Yes we hear about the generous mailbox offerings from Yahoo, Google and now Hotmail. But have you ever thought about the amount of disk space they may need? Hotmail has got about 170 million active users. If every user uses 25MB of the storage on an average basis, the amount of disk space required will be: 170,000,000 * 25 MB = 4,250,000GB or 4,250TB !!!
Finally MSN people moved, that 1 MB mailbox was really a disgrace even comparing to others such as Yahoo's previous 6MB (later 4MB) and Lycos's 10 MB mailboxes.
I wonder if Hotmail users still need to login once a month. Imagine not logging in one month and losing all 250 MB of data in your mailbox!!
