Current affair: AIDS, Heroin

Mehdi Yahyaei

(If your are not living in UK first read World Weddings: Mohammad & the Matchmaker)

Contrary to a line in the sand, unfortunately I enjoyed this movie. Since it mentioned one of the most imperative problems of Iran which the Iranian government do not pay attention to. Unfortunately, this is their habit. They deny all this kind of problems. I did my undergraduate in Iran and saw so many university students who were addicted to heroin. Unfortunatly, in Iran if people know that your are addicted they will not accept you. If this story was true I really adore the girl who accpet the addicted guy.

Moreover if you want to percieve this problem, I suggest you to read the newspaper. As you know, last week most of the newspapers wrote about the one of the most tragic courts in Iran which was about the one of the famous football players of iran who is Naser Mohamadkhani.
People knew that one of thier best football players was addicted. Actualy we could understand this issue if we looked at his face when he sat in Persepolis coach bench. Now I am sure that some other footbal players are addicted as well (I don't want to go through more details, but most of them are Parvin students!!).
Yes, the danger is very near!! Unfortunately the media in the UK pay attention to our problems but our medias neglect them!!!
An other issue which was considered in this program was sex problem in Iran and AIDS.
Here I saw some advertisments about sex education in university. Honestly, I laughed that what would happened to this kind of education!!!!
I remember that when I was studying in Iran we had a course called "tanzime Khanevade" (which means birth/family control, the only course regarding sex issues in Iran education system). It was the most enjoyable course which I had since I attended with my freinds and we laughed from the begining to end!!!.
I remember that we bought condoms for our freinds for his birthday for fun!!!
I also remeber that when I went to the drugstore one of the people who worked there told me that most people buy condoms as gifts!!!

Unfortunatly since in Islam, haveing sex before marriage is prohibitted (the idea which I totaly disagree with) most boys and girls don't know anything about sex. Basicaly, we think that even holding a condom is very bad!!!!
This is why AIDS is one of the most imperative problem in Iran.
Sex is a sense which we should not limit totaly. I know that one of the huge problem between Iranian boyfreinds and girlfreinds is sex issue. I remember that one of my freinds thought that if he/she kis his/her girl/boyfreind, he/she will get AIDS!!!!!!

In conclusion, this movie was really useful movie and I totaly agree with it. The music in the movie was good. In addition, when the movie ridiculed the Sighe rule [temporary marriage] I enjoyed again since I hate this rule. Thanks to the director who was a persian.

I don't know when and where you studied your undergraduate in Iran, but a couple of years ago when I was still in Iran even girls and boys in the first year of high school knew more about sex than I know now. Sex before marriage is very common, at least in tehran and I suppose in other big cities. the only problem is you mentioned is lack of proper education in schools.

The program was interesting, because it pointed out two big problems in the Iranian society: Drugs addiction is the biggest cause of AIDS diffusion in Iran. Also lack of proper sex education creates lots of trouble especially in poor provincial and rural areas where awareness is normally very low (families are closed and more traditional, sex talk is a taboo, ...). That poor girl (Maryam) was a victim of illiteracy and traditional life style.

West Ender:

Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east are the biggest sources of first hand drugs for Iran. Accessible and relatively cheap drugs bring addiction and addiction spreads diseases such as AIDS. Now add to that lack of sex education, which will spread the disease even further.

Certainly the final destination for drugs is Europe and US. I remember a proposal a few years ago: to escort drug dealers out of Iran, instead of fighting and trying to stop them. In this way we will not only monitor the movement of drugs in Iran, but also will make sure that the drugs are going out and not distributed inside the country on their way. I think this proposal has something to say, despite its moral complications. It will also save us tens of millions of dollars which is now spent stopping the drug dealers, and will also save the precious lives of tens of soldiers killed annually in the eastern borders.
