Gathering

Unity

Tonight, I had a small gathering with my flatmates and some friends. JATOON KHALY we were listening to Haydeh and Dariush accompanied by some nice Greek alcohol (Raki I reckon, something like ARAGH SAGGY). Obviously, Greeks were the majority, but amazingly my Persian friend and I managed to talk about Persia for 2 hours!!! We started to talk about the lyrics of the songs and its meanings, which were very difficult to translate, as you know. We then spoke about Hafez and finally our discussion went into the present situation in Persia.

Obviously, we started describing what a beautiful country we have in terms of natural resources, culture and history. Afterwards, we described the atrocities and terrors we (all) have and are experiencing in Persia for the past 25 years since the Islamic Revolution. If you think about it, we are paying the price of our ancestors'/parents' careless or inappropriate actions of the past. Anyways, if we like it or not this is our situation now. The LEAST we should do is do think about the future of our homeland and increase our own political, cultural and historical awareness. Even though, we are far away from home, I am sure that most of us cannot spend a day without thinking about Persia's future. Frankly speaking, we haven't lived psychologically successful lives, however, I believe that we are the ONES (guardian angels) who shall change and improve our homeland by any means possible for future generations, which THEY will then honor and remember us for our resistance towards FREEDOM.

I can't agree with you more, that we have to knowingly increase our own political, cultural and historical awareness; three very important elements. If you look back into the history of the past 150 years, everytime there was a reform and liberal movement, the degree of awareness and intellect of people was more than the previous time, and each movement was stronger than the previous one.

But still I believe the most important reasons of failure were (1) ignorance and illiteracy (2) expecting one person - Reza Shah, Khomeini, Khatami or anyone - to solve all the problems. Our ancestors and especially our [grand] parents have fallen into this trap big time. The only recent historic movement where there is little sign of this mistake is the constitutional revolution in 1906. If you look carefully, all oppressive regimes in Iran have tried to propagate the idea of "one big man" and "one big hero". It's time to get rid of it.

Reminds me of a famous quote by a friend who has been absent for a long time. He used to say something about "Ajdaade Aghel"!! I wonder if he's dead or alive! :-)
